Red Dragon Buying Guide
Red Dragon is a Welsh dart maker, and the Red Dragon darts we carry center on Peter Wright signature barrels and the Razor Edge grip line, in steel tip and soft tip. The barrels run from a 40.6mm torpedo to 54.6mm long, slim designs, so length and grip matter as much as weight when you choose. For a Kansas City-made alternative you can borrow first, see Laserdarts.
Who makes Red Dragon darts?
Red Dragon is a Welsh dart company. It began in 1975 in a garage in Bridgend, Wales, started by John Bluck, a former Ford engineer, and it now has facilities in Bridgend, Kenya and Dallas, Texas. Red Dragon says it made the first mass-produced precision tungsten darts in 1978, and it marked 50 years in 2025.
Most of the Red Dragon darts we carry are Peter Wright signature models developed with the player, such as the Mamba 2, along with the Razor Edge grip line.
Which Peter Wright Red Dragon dart should I choose?
Start with length. The Mamba and Melbourne Masters are long and slim, while the Torpedo SE is short and wider.
| Model | Shape and grip | Steel tip | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mamba | Rings, buttress and DeltaTech grooves | 22g, 24g | 54.6mm |
| Mamba 2 | Same grip pattern | 24g | 54.6mm |
| Melbourne Masters | Edition of his Melbourne Masters barrel | 22g | 54.6mm |
| Medusa | Torpedo | 22g, 24g | 50.4mm |
| World Champion Torpedo SE | Short torpedo | 23g, 25g | 40.6mm |
What is the Red Dragon Razor Edge grip?
Razor Edge is Red Dragon's precision-cut grip, built for players who want the barrel to bite on release. The Razor Edge Extreme is the most aggressive version, in 22g or 24g on a 50.8mm barrel.
The Razor Edge ZX-2 (24g or 26g) and ZX-1 (26g) are 85% tungsten, with the grip in two bands front and rear, a ring break between them for finger placement, and a tapered nose on a parallel profile. If you like that bite, the Laserdart Bonzai pairs a 90% tungsten barrel with an aggressive shark cut in 24g, 26g or 28g.
Which Red Dragon darts come in soft tip, and are they league legal?
Three do: the Mamba soft tip in 18g, 20g or 22g, and the Melbourne Masters and Krypton at 20g. NDA tournaments cap soft tip darts at 20g for the complete dart, including tip, shaft and flight, so the 22g Mamba is too heavy there. Local leagues set their own limits, so check yours, and weigh your complete dart if you are close. For a lighter tungsten option, the uncoated Laserdart Silver Eagle Soft Tip #1 comes in 16g, 18g and 20g.
Which Red Dragon dart suits a player who wants a simple ringed grip?
The Red Dragon Krypton. It is a torpedo with rings along the full length of the barrel and no unusual milling, in steel tip 23g or 25g at 45.7mm long, or soft tip at 20g. If you want the same plain, consistent grip on a slimmer barrel, the Laserdart Silver Eagle Ringed is 90% tungsten with uni-directional grooves, 6.7mm wide in 21g and 24g.
Red Dragon, Harrows or Winmau: which dart brand should I choose?
Choose by the grip and barrel you want, not the badge: Red Dragon, Harrows and Winmau are all established UK makers, and each is strongest in a different area of the range we carry.
- Red Dragon: Peter Wright signature barrels and the aggressive Razor Edge grip, with long, slim options up to 54.6mm.
- Harrows: sets match weighed to within 0.05g with shafts and flights included, the 97% tungsten Wolfram, and the rubber-grip Ace.
- Winmau: best known for dartboards; its darts here are the short Majestic torpedo and the full-length mill-grip FireStorm.
Our own Laserdarts are designed and machined in Kansas City, carry a lifetime barrel guarantee, and can be borrowed first through the Dart Lending Library.
