Disc Golf Gear Guide
Disc golf is played like golf, but with flying discs thrown from a tee toward a chain basket in as few throws as possible. Our disc golf gear is for practice and night play. We carry the Innova Traveller Discatcher, a portable basket, and Dynamic Disc LED Disc Golf Lights.
How is disc golf scored?
Count one stroke for every throw, add any penalty strokes, and the lowest total for the round wins. Each hole starts from a tee and ends when your disc comes to rest in the basket or hangs in the chains.
- Par: courses list a par for each hole, the number of throws a skilled player is expected to need.
- Out of bounds: under PDGA rules a disc that lands out of bounds costs one penalty stroke, and you play your next throw from within 1 meter (about 3 ft) of where it was last in bounds.
- Inside 10 meters (about 33 ft): you must keep your balance and not move past your lie until the disc comes to rest.
What discs should a beginner start with?
Start with a putter and a midrange, then add a fairway driver once you can throw those straight. Slower discs are easier to control while your form develops.
- Putter: the slowest disc, made for short, accurate throws and putts at the basket.
- Midrange: a controllable disc for approach shots and shorter holes.
- Fairway driver: more distance than a midrange without needing as much arm speed.
- Distance driver: the fastest discs. Innova notes that high speed discs need more power to fly properly and are not usually recommended for beginners.
What do the four numbers on a disc golf disc mean?
The four numbers are speed, glide, turn and fade, a flight rating system developed by Innova co-founder Dave Dunipace. Together they describe how a disc is designed to fly.
| Number | Innova range | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | 1 to 14 | How fast the disc must be thrown to fly as designed |
| Glide | 1 to 7 | How well it holds its height in the air |
| Turn | +1 to -5 | How much it drifts right early in a right-handed backhand throw |
| Fade | 0 to 5 | How hard it hooks left as it slows down |
Lower speed and higher glide are easier for new players. Innova notes the ratings are not an exact comparison between different manufacturers.
What is a portable disc golf basket for?
A portable basket lets you practice putting wherever you are, not just at the course. The Innova Traveller Discatcher has a pentagonal basket with real chains that catch discs the way a full-size basket does. Its one-action setup opens quickly and folds down for travel, and it weighs 15 lbs (6.8 kg). Set it up in the backyard, at a park or on a camping trip.
How do you play disc golf at night?
Stick a small LED light on each disc so you can follow its flight and find it after it lands. The Dynamic Disc LED Disc Golf Lights measure 1¾ x ¾ in and tape to the flight plate of any disc. They run for 12+ hours and switch between constant, flashing and blinking modes. Each light is sold individually in white, red, blue or green, so every player in a group can pick a different color. Before you head out, check that your local course allows play after dark.
How can I practice disc golf putting at home?
Putt short and often. Start close to the basket, make a set number in a row, then take a step back.
- Use the same stance and routine on every putt.
- Putt from several angles, not just straight on.
- End each session with a few longer putts to test your range.
A portable basket makes daily practice easy in the yard.
