Dart Gear and Accessories Guide

Gear is everything around the dart itself. That means tools, grip aids, O-rings and weight add-ons in accessories, plus points, scoreboards, award pins, apparel, air darts, practice aids and disc golf. These small parts are often what keeps you playing through a match. Most shafts and steel points use 2BA thread, so check your darts before buying anything threaded.

What tools should I keep in my dart case?

Carry a shaft extractor, a small multi-tool and spare O-rings, plus a point sharpener if you play steel tip. Together they fix the problems that most often end a night early.

  • Broken shaft or tip stuck in the barrel: The Extractor backs it out without stripping the threads.
  • Loose shafts and bent shaft fingers: the keyring Dart Mate Tool tightens shafts and tips and reshapes the fingers.
  • Rattling joints: a set of 2BA O-rings.
  • Burred steel points: a point sharpener.

How do I stop my shafts and flights from coming loose?

An O-ring stops a loose shaft, and a ring on the shaft stops a loose flight.

  • Shaft backing out of the barrel: slip a 2BA O-ring over the threads. On L-Style shafts, use the one-time L-Shaft Tightener Gomu.
  • Flights sliding out of nylon shafts: Grip Rings clamp the prongs tight.
  • Flights loosening on slotted shafts: Metal Slot Lock Rings lock flight and shaft together.
  • Robin-hooding on nylon shafts: Champagne Rings cap the flight cavity, so a following dart is less likely to split the shaft.

What does a dart flight punch do?

A flight punch cuts a slot into your flights so a stem ring can lock them onto the shaft. It is the fix for flights that keep popping out of plastic or nylon shafts.

The Viper Dart Flight Hole Punch Tool is made of heavy duty steel and resin, is small enough to chain onto your case, and includes 3 sets of stem rings (9 total). Each punched slot takes a stem ring that holds the flight in place. Shafts and flights are not included.

Match rings to the system you use: Shell Lock Rings fit only nylon shafts punched with a Shell Lock Punch, not Champagne or Slot Lock cavities.

What helps with sweaty or slippery fingers?

Chalk and rosin dry your fingertips and add friction. Wax and paste add tack instead. Pick based on whether your hands get wet or just feel slick.

  • Chalk Bag: draws sweat off your fingers between turns.
  • Rosin Bag: a quick tap of rosin powder for more hold on the barrel.
  • Wax: a solid tablet that adds tack without powder dust.
  • Mor-Grip: a rosin-based paste that stays tacky through long sessions. A small amount covers a full match.

Keep a Laserdarts Microfiber Towel in your case to wipe hands and barrels.

Do dart point cones help with bounce-outs?

They can. A point cone slides up the point and seats against the front of the barrel, closing the step where a following dart tends to catch and deflect.

The Trident-180 Dart Point Cones weigh 0.008 grams, so they will not change your dart's balance. They work on steel or soft tip points that the cone slides onto snugly, and each pack has 4 sets (12 cones) in black, grey, red or white.

Cones do not cure every bounce-out. A burred steel point causes them too, so keep points smooth with a point sharpener.

Which shaft and tip extractor should I buy?

Each of these three extractors removes a broken shaft or a stuck soft tip point from the barrel without stripping the threads, so choose by how you want to carry it.

Pliers are the quickest way to ruin a barrel's threads. If the threads are already damaged, see the next question.

How do I fix a stripped or cross-threaded barrel?

You can often re-cut the threads instead of replacing the barrel. Run a 2BA Thread Tap into the point or shaft cavity to clear out debris and cut clean threads. A tap handle holds it steady so it goes in straight. Turn it slowly and keep it centered. The tap is sized for 2BA only, so it will not repair a ¼ in cavity. If a Laserdarts barrel has cracked or broken, check the lifetime barrel guarantee first.
