Winmau Buying Guide
Winmau is best known for bristle dartboards, and for most home players the Winmau Blade 6 is the one to buy: a sisal board made to World Darts Federation specifications with ultra-thin 60 degree angled wire. Winmau makes its boards and tungsten darts in its own UK factory. We stock Winmau boards, darts, flights and lighting alongside our own Laserdarts, machined in Kansas City.
Who makes Winmau, and how do you say the name?
Winmau is a British company that makes its own bristle dartboards and tungsten darts in its UK factory. Harry Kicks, a former Sergeant Major, founded it in 1946 and named it after his wife, Winifred Maud, which is why the name is pronounced Win-more.
Winmau exports to more than 70 countries, its Blade board line has been running for over 20 years, and it is the official dartboard supplier to the PDC. The Blade 6 we stock is made to World Darts Federation specifications.
Which Winmau dartboard is right for me?
For most players it is the Blade 6. The other two boards we carry are training boards with harder targets.
| Board | What sets it apart | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Blade 6 | Ultra-thin angled wire, Density Control wire in the doubles, trebles and bull, Rota-Lock mounting | Home and league play |
| Tournament Dartboard | Smaller than a standard board, staple-free bullseye | Practice on a tighter target |
| Blade 5 Champions Choice | Half-width doubles and trebles, staple-free playing area; discontinued by Winmau | A second board for accuracy work |
What else do I need to hang a Winmau board?
A marked throw line, wall protection and good light. Hang the board so the center of the bull is 5 ft 8 in (173 cm) from the floor, with the steel tip line 7 ft 9¼ in (237 cm) from the board face.
- Wall protection: the OutChart surround is built to fit Winmau bristle boards.
- Lighting: the Polaris Light Ring runs on a rechargeable power pack, so no cord runs to the board, and its even light cuts shadows on the doubles and trebles.
- Throw line: our Laser Throw Line projects the mark onto the floor without tape or paint.
Can I mount a Winmau dartboard in a corner?
Yes. The Winmau Edge Corner Dartboard Bracket mounts a dartboard into a room corner instead of a flat wall, and it works with any dartboard, not only Winmau boards.
Check the floor first: the steel tip throw line is 7 ft 9¼ in (237 cm) from the board face, so the corner needs a clear lane straight out in front of it. If you have no wall to spare at all, the Gran Darts Tripod Stand comes with an O type bracket for most bristle dartboards and needs no drilling.
My Winmau Polaris light ring is dim or patchy: which part do I need?
Replace the power pack if the ring runs dim or won't hold a charge, and the light strip if the light has uneven or dead spots.
- Polaris Replacement Power Pack: the rechargeable pack that swaps in for the original. Start here if the whole ring won't power on.
- Polaris Replacement Light Strip: the LED strip that fits into the existing ring housing and restores even light all the way around.
Either part brings the ring back without buying a whole new Polaris Light Ring.
How do I make a Winmau bristle board last longer?
Rotate it, keep it dry and keep your points sharp. Sisal wears fastest where most darts land, usually around the 20.
- Rotate regularly. Remove the number ring, turn the board one black segment and refit the ring with 20 at the top.
- Never wet or soak the board. Water swells and weakens the fibers.
- Pull darts out with a slight twist, and don't leave darts stored in the board.
- Fix burred points with a point sharpener, since burrs tear the sisal.
Which Winmau darts do you carry, and how do they compare with Laserdarts?
We carry two Winmau steel tip barrels with very different shapes, plus a 20g soft tip Majestic.
- Majestic: a short torpedo with Ripsaw Grip, 24g at 40.6mm long.
- FireStorm: a longer 50.8mm barrel with mill-grip along its full length, in 22g, 24g or 26g.
If you want more weights and grips to compare, our Laserdarts are designed and machined in Kansas City, and US players can borrow up to two sets through the Dart Lending Library before buying.
Do Winmau flights and shafts fit other brands of darts?
Yes. Winmau Prism Alpha and Rock Legends flights are cut in a standard shape and fit any standard shaft, whatever brand your barrel is. Prism Alpha is the everyday flight worth keeping spares of, and Rock Legends puts band artwork on the same shape. Winmau Vecta shafts fuse a polycarbonate body to aluminum alloy tips with extra-deep flight slots, in short or medium.
