Dart Accessories and Tools Guide

Dart accessories are the small tools and parts that keep a set throwing the same way every week: O-rings, extractors, sharpeners, grip aids and weight add-ons. Most of what we carry is the Horizon Darts house line. A set of three 2BA O-rings stops loose shafts, and a shaft extractor saves a barrel when one breaks. For replacement tips, see our dart points.

What tools should every dart player carry?

Carry a multi-tool, O-rings, an extractor and spares, and most league-night problems take a minute to fix.

  • Multi-tool: tightens shafts and tips, opens shafts for flights and reshapes shaft fingers. The Dart Mate Tool rides on a key ring; the Universal Tool covers the basics for less.
  • Extractor: pulls broken shafts and stuck soft tips without stripping threads, like the Trinidad Shaft Extractor Carabiner.
  • Sharpener: for steel tip players.
  • Spare flights and shafts.

How do I sharpen steel tip darts?

Work the point on a sharpening stone just until the burrs are gone, keeping it sharp but slightly rounded. A burred point bounces out and tears board fibers.

Soft tips are not sharpened. Replace them when they bend or break.

Why do my flights keep falling out of the shaft?

The slot or prongs have usually opened up from hits and repeated flight changes. Replace worn shafts, or add a ring that clamps the flight in place.

Do flight protectors actually work?

Yes, for the job they are built for: a flight protector keeps the fins square and stops flights getting crushed in a case or bag, so you replace fewer bent or torn flights. The metal Flight Protector is lightweight aluminum, slides over the end of the flight, works with most standard flight styles and also cuts down on robin-hooding and deflections by guarding the flight's edge.

A protector will not stop a flight from dropping out of a worn shaft; a clamping ring is the fix for that. Fit Flight players can also keep spares flat in a Cosmo Fit Shell Container.

How can I change dart weight without buying new barrels?

Screw in an Add-A-Gram if your barrel has a ¼ in threaded cavity. On a steel tip dart it adds weight at the back; on a soft tip barrel you can fit it front or back to shift the balance.

Wax, rosin or chalk: which grip aid should I use?

Pick by your hands: tacky aids add hold, while chalk draws sweat away.

  • Wax adds light tack with no powder.
  • Mor-Grip is a rosin-based paste that stays tacky for sweaty or slick hands.
  • A Rosin Bag gives a quick grip boost before you step to the line.
  • A Chalk Bag keeps your throwing hand dry through long matches.

A little goes a long way, and it is worth checking league rules first.
